When it comes to reducing waste, sometimes the smallest swaps can make the biggest difference. That’s exactly the thinking behind Fongky, a New Zealand-made toothbrush brand founded by Gavin Fong, who asked a simple but powerful question while helping his two young daughters brush their teeth one evening: Why do we throw out perfectly good toothbrush handles every three months?
That everyday parenting moment sparked an idea that would soon become a mission. With dentists recommending regular toothbrush replacements and around 20 million toothbrushes estimated to end up in New Zealand landfill every year, Gavin saw an opportunity to rethink a daily essential. The result is Fongky, an innovative reusable toothbrush system designed to minimise waste without compromising on quality or affordability.
One of the biggest surprises in developing Fongky was discovering how often sustainability can be misunderstood.
For Gavin, one of the biggest challenges was resisting the temptation to choose materials that may appear eco-friendly on the surface but don’t necessarily offer the best environmental outcome.
“Bamboo would have been infinitely easier to market and sell, particularly for eco-conscious consumers, but bamboo simply isn’t a genuine eco-friendly material for a toothbrush.”
Instead, Fongky’s reusable handles are made from 100% recycled plastic, carefully chosen after evaluating the full lifecycle impact of different materials.
“We landed on recycled plastic because it has the best score when looking at the full life cycle and ensures it has the longest life in a bathroom environment.”
With every replacement head used, 85% less plastic is needed, making each brush a simple yet impactful way to reduce waste over time.
The future is looking bright and colourful for the brand, with Gavin already exploring ways to expand the range.
“We have a lot of ideas in mind like more colourways, different bristle designs and complementary products.”
