3 Incredible Ingredients That Keep The Largest Organ in Your Body, The Skin, Safe This Winter

As you know, skin covers every surface of your body. Divided into three layers, the human skin is about 2mm thick and includes: the epidermis or outer layer, for protection against injury, infection, heat and cold; the dermis, containing collagen and other materials vital to the skin’s strength, its ability to repair itself and fight off infections; and the subcutaneous tissue, serving as insulation, a food reserve and binds the skin to your body.

Skin is considered your largest organ, which is approximately 15 percent of your overall body mass. Thinking of it as an organ, rather than something that you can use and abuse, puts things in proper perspective.

It’s also important to note that, on average, the human skin is regenerated approximately once a month. Although that’s good enough, it is still a long time! Especially if you’ve been constantly exposed to the elements, including dry winter air.

That’s why we’ve included a bunch of useful products in our June box to help you keep your skin safe, during the cold months ahead and well into 2022.

Included in the products are some skin-safe and restorative ingredients, such as:

1. Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of those staple skincare ingredients that everyone can benefit from. It’s a substance that occurs naturally in our bodies and is effective because it can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, helping skin to retain moisture. When you apply a hyaluronic acid serum, such as the Platone Active Eye Cream, to your skin, it acts like a sponge by attracting moisture to boost hydration on the surface of skin. It’s one of the best moisturising agents available for both oily and dry skin types, especially during the summer-to-fall and winter months, when plummeting temperatures and humidity levels, not to mention indoor heating, can really dehydrate your skin.

2. Vitamin C

The humble Vitamin C actually comes in different kinds. Ascorbic acid is the one you want in your skincare products as it absorbs the quickest. Once absorbed, it helps to stabilise and create collagen molecules, making it one of the best anti-aging ingredients on the market. The improved formula of the By Nature Face Serum with Vitamin C + Collagen thus will give you your natural glow back after only a few uses. Vitamin C, in the form of ascorbic acid, is also an antioxidant that helps the skin to repair any UV damage. It's also worth knowing that Vitamin C will destabilise when it comes into contact with the air, so look for small, opaque bottles with pump dispensers, like the one used for the By Nature Face Serum, so that the vitamin won’t lose its potency before you use it.

3. Manuka Honey

The buzz about Manuka honey and its many benefits has been around for ages. Known as one of New Zealand’s best superfoods, it actually works best as a topical skincare ingredient. This unique honey is characterised by its deep golden hue and high concentration of essential vitamins, minerals and other antioxidants. It’s also highly valued for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, humectant and emollient properties. Humectants work by drawing moisture from the air into your skin to boost hydration. Emollient moisturisers, on the other hand, fill the spaces between skin cells to promote softer skin. Thanks to this mixture of benefits, Manuka honey is one of the most effective natural moisturisers out there

While some people apply manuka honey directly to their skin, we recommend using skincare products formulated with manuka honey, such as the Bees Brilliance Healing Hand and Body Lotion. This top-rated moisturiser uses other all-natural, bee-related ingredients such as beeswax too. The non-greasy lotion is formulated to be quickly absorbed by your skin and contains no added fragrance. It is ideal for use after sanitising your hands with those drying, typically alcohol-based products. Many customers have testified to the lotion’s effectiveness is combating dry skin and even flaky scars.
